What Actually Changed on 8 April 2026

The 2026 increase was the second consecutive April fee rise. The 2025 change went from a pre-2025 schedule (adult online GBP 88.50) to GBP 94.50. The 2026 change pushed that to GBP 102. So an adult renewer paying online has seen the fee rise by roughly 15 percent over two years.

When to Renew in 2026 (Not Just How Much)

UK passports can be renewed at any point, but the calculus changes with how close you are to expiry. Three timing rules to know in 2026:

9-month early carry-over

Up to nine months of unused validity on your current passport carries over to your new 10-year passport. Renew when your current document has 8 months and 29 days left, and your new passport is valid for 10 years and (nearly) 9 months. Same GBP 102 fee.

EU 6-month rule

Most EU member states require UK passports to have at least 6 months of validity remaining on the date you leave the EU. Effectively this means renewing roughly 9 months before expiry to avoid the risk of being turned away at the gate. The FCDO publishes country-specific advice at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

10-week service window

HMPO recommends applying at least 10 weeks before any planned travel. In off-peak months (January, February, November, December) the actual turnaround is typically 3 to 4 weeks, but the 10-week buffer is the safe planning horizon.

Five Ways to Pay Less in 2026

1
Apply online, never postSave £13.50

Online is structurally cheaper than the paper form. Processing time is identical. The GBP 13.50 difference (GBP 102 vs GBP 115.50) was widened in the 2025 fee change to push more applications online.

2
Use the GOV.UK photo checkerSave £10 to £13

Photograph yourself on your phone, run the image through the gov.uk photo checker as part of the online application. No booth, no photographer. The checker rejects bad photos before you submit.

3
Avoid third-party renewal sitesSave £50 to £100

Several websites charge a surcharge on top of the HMPO fee for assistance with the application. There is no real assistance offered: the form is the same, the fee is the same, the wait is the same. Apply directly at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport.

4
Renew off-peakFaster, not cheaper

November, December, January, and February see turnarounds of 3 to 4 weeks. July and August can stretch to the full 10. You pay the same fee but save the cost of fast-track if your situation drifts.

5
Combine the family in one batchSave admin time

Photos, identity documents, and certificates can be reused across family applications in the same trip. The fee is per-passport, but the time cost of preparing the application is largely fixed.

2026 FAQ

How much will UK passport renewal cost in 2026?
From 8 April 2026, adult online renewal costs GBP 102, adult postal GBP 115.50, fast track GBP 166.50, premium same-day GBP 239.50, and child online GBP 66.50. These rates replaced the April 2025 schedule (which itself replaced the long-running 2018 to 2024 fees). Confirm at gov.uk/passport-fees.
When did UK passport fees change in 2026?
The current rates took effect on 8 April 2026. The change was set by a statutory instrument approved in early 2026 and applied to all applications submitted on or after 8 April. Applications submitted before that date were charged the pre-8-April rate.
Why have UK passport fees gone up so much in two years?
The 2025 and 2026 increases together added roughly 23 percent to the adult online fee (GBP 82.50 in 2024, GBP 102 in 2026). HMPO has cited cost recovery and the funding of HM Passport Office operations as the justification. The change required parliamentary approval via statutory instrument.
Is the 2026 increase the same for postal and online?
Approximately, yes. All tiers rose by roughly 8 percent on 8 April 2026. Adult online went up 7.9 percent (GBP 94.50 to GBP 102). Adult postal went up 7.9 percent (GBP 107 to GBP 115.50). Premium went up 7.9 percent (GBP 222 to GBP 239.50). Fast track went up 7.4 percent (GBP 155 to GBP 166.50).
How much does it cost to renew a passport online in 2026?
Online renewal in 2026 costs GBP 102 for adults and GBP 66.50 for children. You apply at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport, upload a digital photo (free via the photo checker app), and pay by card. The new passport is delivered to your home by courier within up to 10 weeks of submission.
Will UK passport fees rise again in 2026 or 2027?
HMPO has not announced a further 2026 increase. The 8 April 2026 schedule is expected to hold for at least 12 months. Any further change would require parliamentary approval and is typically signalled 1 to 2 months ahead. Watch gov.uk/passport-fees for revisions.
