Urgent UK Passport in 1 Week
Fast track is the answer for most 1-week scenarios. GBP 166.50, passport office appointment, courier delivery. If you have less than 2 days, premium same-day at GBP 239.50 is your only option. Updated 8 April 2026.
In one paragraph
For travel in roughly a week, fast track at £166.50 is the standard answer. You apply online, get a PEX reference, book a passport office appointment, attend, and the new passport arrives by courier within about a week. For travel in 1 to 2 days, the only option is premium same-day at £239.50: attend in person, collect 4 hours later, adults only.
Decision Tree: Which Service Do I Actually Need?
Travel in 10+ weeks
Save £64.50Standard online at GBP 102. No need for any urgent service. 10 weeks is the HMPO service standard and applies in even the busiest summer months.
Travel in 6 to 9 weeks
Probably standardStandard online at GBP 102 is very likely to deliver in time. Off-peak processing takes 3 to 4 weeks; peak season runs 6 to 8 weeks. Apply now; only escalate to fast track if HMPO contacts you with a delay warning.
Travel in 3 to 5 weeks
Fast trackFast track at GBP 166.50. Standard might just make it but the risk is real. Fast track delivers within about a week of the appointment, so a 3-week window is comfortable. Book the appointment immediately.
Travel in 1 to 2 weeks
Fast track urgentlyFast track at GBP 166.50, but book the earliest available appointment across all 7 offices. London often books up 2 weeks ahead; Newport, Durham, or Peterborough often have nearer slots.
Travel in 1 to 2 days
Premium same-dayPremium same-day at GBP 239.50 is the only viable option. Adults only. Book a slot, attend in the morning, collect 4 hours later. No premium for under-16s; for an urgent child passport, fast track at GBP 135.50 is the best you can do.
Travel tomorrow morning
Already too latePremium same-day requires an appointment slot. If you cannot get one today, you cannot fly tomorrow morning. Options: rebook the flight (most airlines allow this for a fee), apply for premium same-day for a later day, or fly without if your destination accepts emergency travel documents (rare).
Fast Track Step by Step
Complete the standard online passport application at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport. Select fast track when prompted. You will need a recent photo, your current passport details, and a card to pay the GBP 166.50 fee.
Within minutes of submitting, HMPO emails you a PEX (Passport Examination) reference number. Keep this; you need it to book the appointment.
Go to gov.uk/book-a-passport-appointment with your PEX reference. The system shows availability at all 7 UK offices. Choose the earliest workable slot. London Globe House books up fastest; try Newport, Durham, Peterborough as alternatives.
Bring: PEX reference, current passport, two signed photos, proof of travel (flight, ferry, or Eurostar booking), any supporting documents. For children, the child must attend with parent or guardian.
HMPO processes the application after the appointment. Your new passport is couriered to your home within approximately 7 working days. Track via the HMPO email confirmation.
If Every Office Is Booked Out
Peak summer can mean every available slot at every office for your timeframe is taken. Options in order of preference:
- Refresh the booking system regularly. Cancellations and reschedules release slots throughout the day. Try at 09:00, 13:00, and 17:00.
- Check premium same-day instead of fast track. Premium slot turnover can be higher than fast-track because it is more expensive. If you can absorb the extra GBP 73, premium availability may exceed fast track.
- Consider rebooking your travel. Calculate the cost of the rebook against the cost of the urgent passport service. Some travel insurers cover passport-delay rebooking; check your policy.
- Contact HMPO directly. Phone 0300 222 0000 (Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00, Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 17:30). For genuinely exceptional cases (medical emergency, bereavement), HMPO can sometimes find a slot or arrange a specific accommodation.
- Last resort: change the booking. Most airlines allow name and date changes for a fee, particularly for passport-related issues with prior notice. Cost varies wildly; check before assuming.
Total Cost of Urgency (Realistic Numbers)
| Component | Fast track scenario | Premium same-day scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Passport fee | £166.50 | £239.50 |
| Photo (booth or photographer) | £10 | £10 |
| Travel to office (return) | £20 to £80 | £20 to £80 |
| Same-day food / lunch waiting | £0 (not needed) | £10 to £25 |
| Possible overnight hotel near office | £0 (not needed) | £0 to £100 |
| Time off work (1 day) | Variable | Variable |
| Realistic total | £200 to £260 | £280 to £455 |
The headline fees (GBP 166.50 / GBP 239.50) are not the full cost. Factor in travel, time off work, and any food or hotel for the wait. For premium same-day specifically, the all-in cost can comfortably exceed GBP 400 if you live far from any office.
When Not to Pay for Urgency
HMPO consistently delivers standard applications faster than the 10-week service standard. If you have 6+ weeks until travel, the math usually says save the money:
- Off-peak (November to February) standard turnaround is typically 3 to 4 weeks.
- Late spring and early autumn turnaround is typically 4 to 6 weeks.
- Peak summer (July, August) can extend to 6 to 8 weeks but rarely to the full 10.
- HMPO sends an email at submission and again at issue, so you can monitor progress.
If you submit now and HMPO sends a delay warning two weeks before your travel date, fast track is still available as an upgrade (with some logistical friction). Better to start standard and escalate than to pay for fast track upfront when standard would have sufficed.
