Highland and Island Residents

For applicants in the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney, or Shetland, a passport-office trip is a serious undertaking. Practical considerations:

  • Highland residents may find a return train from Inverness to Glasgow takes most of a day. Premium same-day works if you book an early-morning slot and stay overnight. Many use fast track instead and have the new passport couriered home.
  • Orkney and Shetland residents face the additional cost of a ferry or flight to mainland Scotland. The combined travel cost can rival the GBP 73 premium / fast-track gap, so fast track is often the better economic choice unless travel is imminent.
  • Western Isles residents typically travel via Stornoway-Ullapool-Inverness-Glasgow, requiring an overnight stay. Plan for at least two full days off work.

HMPO does not offer mobile passport services or remote interviews. The Glasgow visit is mandatory for fast track and premium throughout Scotland.

Glasgow vs Durham for Borders Applicants

Residents of the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, and northern Northumberland sometimes have a genuine choice between Glasgow and Durham. The decision often comes down to slot availability rather than distance:

Carlisle1 hr 30 min train1 hr 30 min trainToss-up; check slot availability
Hawick2 hours by road2 hours by roadEither workable
Berwick-upon-Tweed2 hr 30 min train1 hr 30 min trainDurham easier
Dumfries1 hr 30 min train2 hr 30 min trainGlasgow easier

Both Glasgow and Durham regularly have better availability than Globe House London. For most Borders applicants the choice is between same-day slots in either, not between offices on principle.

Booking Patterns and Tips

Glasgow is the second-largest UK office by volume

Behind Globe House. Slots in May to August can fill 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Mid-week morning appointments tend to open up most often. Refresh gov.uk/book-a-passport-appointment first thing in the morning when HMPO releases new slots. For premium same-day specifically, weekday slots are scarcer than weekend slots, the opposite of fast track.
